Krakow, Poland

Krakow City

Wandering through the streets of Kraków, you may feel like you are stepping into a living fairy tale. The heart of the Rynek Główny (Market Square) is lined with colourful townhouses, the iconic St. Mary’s Basilica, and the historic Cloth Hall. Towering over the city is Wawel Castle, a symbol of Poland’s royal past, where you can explore courtyards, historic buildings and the legendary dragon’s den. If you search carefully, you may find him breathing out his flames of fire at anyone who dares to pass by!  .

Rynek Museum

If you want to be more adventurous, visit the Rynek Museum, which offers you the opportunity to explore Krakow’s medieval market square.  The archaeological site allows you to explore excavated vendors’ stalls and discover what life was like in the city during the Middle Ages.  Admission is free on Tuesdays, but you need to get in the queue early on the day to secure your ticket.

Jewish Quarter

Just a short walk away, you will discover Kazimierz’s historic Jewish Quarter, with its seven synagogues, trendy cafés, and vibrant street art.

Discover the iconic scenes from the Oscar-winning Schindler’s List and then take a well-deserved break in the Old Market Square, surrounded by some beautiful examples of architecture from the 17th century.

Kościuszko Mound

For a panoramic view of Krakow, a climb up Kościuszko Mound is a definite must!  Off the beaten tourist map, it is a spectacular way to appreciate the city’s skyline and undeniable charm and discover all about one of Poland’s best-loved heroes.

On a budget?

Many paid guided tours of the city are available; however, if you are on a budget, there are apps (The Krakow Guide and Audio Tour, for example) that are a great way of discovering the highlights yourself. Check for the days when there is free admission to Wawel Castle, and don’t forget your free ticket to the Rynek Museum on a Tuesday!

Must See Attractions

Krakow is an excellent base for visiting Auschwitz or the Salt Mine Museum. They are easily accessible by public transport. The SKA 2 or 3 train from Krakow Central Station will take you to Oswiecim, a 25-minute walk or a taxi ride from Auschwitz.  If visiting the Salt Mine, take the 304 bus from Krakow to just outside the mine.  It is worth booking tickets to the museums in advance – visit their websites for more information.
